Brighton and Hove Greens ask for help for those who need housing

Brighton and Hove Green Party are calling on the local council to hold a summit on the housing impact, due to the credit crunch.

With 7000 families on the waiting list for social housing, Councillor Bill Randall says, "It's a matter of urgency. We fear that many of the large schemes, like the King Alfred, The Marina and The Preston Barracks Developments, could be crunched as funding dries up. As a result more than 1000 affordable homes could be lost to the city".

Councillor Bernard Little says, "English Nature, The Environment Agency and Water Management must be given the power to stop and reverse developments that make flooding more likely"

Australian Senator speaks out on lack of housing for indigenous Australians

Rachel Siewart, Australian Green Senator and spokesperson for indigeneous issues, says the Rudd Government's decision to focus on poverty issues amongst Aborigines is welcomed, adding that "adequate housing should be top on the list of priorities".

A quarter of the native population lives in overcrowded conditions, mostly in the Northern Territory and Western Australia, and those most likely to suffer from lack of proper water supplies are children, who can suffer from skin infections, respiratory problems, eye and ear infections, diarrhoea and rheumatic fever.
