Canada Greens ask for peace in Columbia

Canada Green Party Leader Elizabeth May has again asked for a peaceful solution in Columbia, following the vice-presidential visit to Canada. Columbia is particularly poignant for Greens, as the country's Green Party founder Ingrid Betancourt was kidnapped in 2002 and is still held captive.

Elizabeth says Canada should not have a free trade agreement with Columbia, saying "Columbia is simply not defending human rights and is one of the worst violators of labour rights in the hemisphere. The on-going conflict with FARC complicates the move to defend human rights, nevertheless it must be on the agenda to pursue a negotiated resolution to the humanitarian crisis presented by the hostages in FARC control."
